Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a new organization in the neighborhood, connecting  volunteers with neighbors in need, sponsored by the Armory Park Neighborhood Association and the Armory Center.   We’re also a part of Neighbors’ Care Alliance and Pima Council on Aging.

Drop by our office at the Center and say Hi to our dispatcher.

Starting in October, we’ll begin providing neighbors with rides to medical appointments or for necessary grocery shopping;  we also run critical errands like picking up prescriptions.  And all our services are free.  If you can donate a little time or cash, that’s fine but not required. (You can make donations through the APNA website; make sure to indicate your donation is for Neighbors Helping Neighbors.

We’re looking for clients.  If you’re fifty-five or older and live in Armory Park, we’ll talk to you about signing up for transportation.  If you’re eligible for other services like SunVan, we’re not out to replace them, but we want to hear about your situation.  Call us at 520-344-3222 for an interview.

Parking Program Finally Here

The Armory Park Neighborhood Association has created a new parking program for residents in the neighborhood. It’s a voluntary program that’s designed to complement the already existing Parkwise programs that are available to all residents in the area. By covering areas where those programs are not desirable, needed, or cost effective, it can provide some of the same benefits, and a few added benefits at minimal or no cost.

Each APNA membership will be provided a free decal. (Couple memberships receive 2 decals.) Non-members will pay  $10 for the first permit.  All secondary/additional decals for anyone, will be available for $5. This is a one-time cost.

For more information about the program, please download the Armory Park Neighborhood Parking Program Package (MS Word, 7 pages), which includes the application. Please review the whole document. Hopefully, it will answer any questions you may have about the program, and about parking problems and parking laws now enforced throughout the area.

Then, simply print out the 1 page application, fill it in and follow the instructions so you can get your decal as soon as possible!

APNA Membership and Board Meeting, June 14, 7 pm

The next APNA board meeting is Tuesday, June 14 at 7 pm at St. Andrews Episcopal Church. APNA Membership and Board Meeting: May 10

The next APNA meeting is Tuesday, May 10, at 7 pm at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.  This meeting will be a combined membership meeting and board meeting;  the primary agenda items will be: 1) a presentation by the people who are developing the student housing at the former Greyhound bus site, and 2) membership discussion and action on recommendations for APNA position(s)/step(s) related to student housing.

Proposed Student Housing Developments in Neighborhood: APNA Special Meeting Scheduled for April 20

At the April 12 APNA board meeting, Peach Properties presented the concept for a proposed student housing complex to be built at 4th Avenue and Broadway (a site that is now within neighborhood boundaries). About 45 people attended the meeting, and many voiced concerns and suggestions.

In the past, OasisTucson, led by Jim Campbell, has made presentations to APNA related to a proposed student housing project on the former Greyhound Site.  At the May 10 APNA meeting, he will return to present that project in its latest iteration.

On Friday, April 15, the UA announced that the Peach and OasisTucson projects were chosen from a field of nine proposals submitted in response to a university RFP (request for proposals) for public-private student housing partnerships that was issued last year. Their selection means is these two projects are now “on track” for development. (You can read more about the news from the Arizona Daily Star and on the UA website.)

Because of the UA announcement, the APNA board has scheduled a special meeting of members and neighbors for Wednesday, April 20, at 6:30 pm at St. Andrew’s Church. At the meeting,  we will discuss the projects and determine the association’s next steps. This discussion will help the board to frame its negotiations with the developers, city and UA.  Please come and share your thoughts.
