Please Join us for the APNA Annual Meeting, November 13, 2012

As you all know, it’s election time again. APNA’s Annual Meeting, every November, is when we choose the next year’s board, its officers, and alternates to the board for the next year.

This year, 5 positions are up for election. Some board members would like to run again, and a number of new candidates have presented themselves. It should be interesting.

Also on the agenda is an election for the advisory board (APHZAB); updates on the new apartments from Peach Properties/ Holualoa; and a slew of other interesting topics.

Please check out the agenda: APNA Agenda 11-13-12

If you would like to run for a position, but haven’t put your name in yet, please come to the meeting and introduce yourself!

As always, the meeting starts at 7 pm, at St. Andrew’s Parrish Hall.

Hope to see everyone!

Community Garden/ Neighborhood Gardening Network Meeting Set for October 4

Gardeners and aspiring gardeners: On Thursday, October 4 at 6 pm at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, we will have our first neighborhood meeting about the Armory Park community garden and neighborhood gardening network.

Gardeners and aspiring gardeners: On Thursday, October 4 at 6 pm at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, we will have our  first neighborhood meeting about the Armory Park community garden and neighborhood gardening network.

Some background: Last year, APNA received a grant from PRO Neighborhoods to create community gardens throughout the
neighborhood. Project goals are to:

  1. clean up and use vacant and
unsightly lots;
  2. provide spaces in the neighborhood where people of all
ages can come together to garden;
  3. provide resources and support for
organic, sustainable community gardening;  and
  4. encourage neighbors to
grow fresh, nutritious produce, with surplus to be donated to the
Neighbors Feeding Neighbors program.

After the organizing meetings and an assessment of available lots, we found that in addition to the community garden,  some neighbors have an interest in creating a gardening network for people who garden in their own yards to get neighborly help in how to start and maintain a garden, as well as a gardening tool lending library.  This meeting is the next step in getting the project off the ground.

At the September neighborhood association meeting, there was a brief discussion of the project, and I mentioned that we would take a survey to find out which tools neighbors suggest we get for the lending library.  So, please take a few minutes to take the survey.

I hope that we will see many people at the meeting on October 4.

Tonight's APNA meeting

(Sorry for the image quality. But hopefully it does the job.)

Tonight’s Armory Park Neighborhood Association meeting:

Ron Schwabe of Peach Properties discussed plans for the former Armory Park Apartments, now that all the seniors have been relocated to the Sentinel Plaza Apartments on Congress Street, west of I-10.

The approximately 140 apartments are primarily studios, with a handful of one-bedroom units. The target demographic would be market rate, meaning mostly adults rather than students. It is to be medium upscale, in the $500 to $600 range. Peach Properties would be developing the site in partnership with Holualoa Companies, a Tucson-based Real Estate investment and development firm.

Serious concerns were raised by nearby neighbors about adequate parking at the complex. Mr. Schwabe and Holualoa asset manager–and former AP Neighborhood resident–Anne Lawrence said that they would secure more than 50 parking spaces for residents.

Another point of contention was the plan to construct a small swimming pool on the south side of the complex, carving out a portion of the current parking lot. Neighbors worried about noise from pool parties, particularly in light of the recent debacle at The District student apartments at 6th Street and 4th Avenue. Mr. Schwabe replied that the resident mix would be far different, and that adequate security would be in place, along with enforced pool hours.

The complex is now under contract to the partners, with ownership expected to be complete in November. Renovation is expect to begin soon after.
