Tucson Water Zanjero Program

Evening Armory Parkers!

We had a great meeting tonight, and I for one learned a lot about water, or rather, why using water costs money.  Our presenter, Fernando Molina of Tucson Water, mentioned the Zanjero Program, which can provide you with a free audit at your home (i.e. find leaks, etc).  If you’re interested, please see the info plagiarized from their website below:

Tucson Water has a popular program to help residential customers manage their water use: the Zanjero Program. Customers can request a free individualized survey of home water use with tips and information on how to lower water use and water bills.

Background: In the 1800s, water users met each year to elect a Zanjero (Zahn-HAIR-oh), or water manager, to make sure water users irrigated fields according to the community-developed schedule, thus preventing water waste. The Zanjero also made sure the water-carrying acequias (ah-seh-kee-ahs), or canals, were properly constructed and maintained so that life-giving water could flow to people’s homes and farms. When water was scarce, the Zanjero had the authority to control water use for the benefit of the entire community.

Tucson Water Zanjeros have extensive training in indoor and outdoor water conservation and related water issues. A Zanjero audit includes checking for leaks, measuring flow rates of showerheads and faucets, looking for special water uses such as spas, pools, or misting systems, and analyzing the efficiency of the irrigation system. If appropriate, new low-flow fixtures, faucet aerators, or other water-saving devices are installed. The resident receives the results of the analysis, along with information to help decrease water use and water bills.

To request a Zanjero water audit or receive more information, call (520) 791-3242 or e-mail Tucson Water Customer Service.

I am a relatively recent Armory Park resident (2/16) along with my wife, Donna and our little dog Lulu. In our 7+ decades, Donna and I lived over 30 years in Anchorage, Alaska before moving to Arizona. We have been Arizona residents for 16 years before coming here including 12 in Green Valley and four in west Tucson. We love the neighborhood for its history, walkability and interesting residents. Lulu insists on walking every day so you may see us following her around and picking up trash to keep our neighborhood presentable.
